"Do's and
Don'ts"
In Writing Members of Congress
I am writing to urge you to
(support/oppose) S____/HR____ |
- Immediately identify the subject you are
writing about. If legislation has already been introduced,
identify the bill(s) by name and number. If a bill has not yet
been introduced describe in a sentence or two the subject of your
letter.
My name is...I am writing on
behalf of... |
- Identify yourself. If you are
writing on behalf of a company or organization, be sure you say
so. Your letters will carry far more weight if you live or do
business in the Senator's state or Representative's district.
I urge you to
(support/oppose) S____/HR____ because... |
- Tell the Member of Congress why you are
advocating the action.
- State the facts. Give
illustration. Tell how the legislation will affect you or your
company. Don't assume the Congressman knows as much about the
particular situation as you do. Offer to provide more
information.
- Keep the letter polite. It should
be positive and constructive. Never threaten or be
sarcastic. And don't assume the letter won't be
read.... ...It will.
- NEVER send a form letter or a post card.
- Keep the letter brief--ideally to one
page.
In conclusion, I urge you to
... |
- Repeat your reason for writing.
- Thank the congressman for his or her
cooperation.
